Digits
A US replacement ledger that categorizes bank and payroll feeds, pays bills, sends invoices, and hands your CPA a year-end Excel package.
Best for
US service and SaaS shops, or firms, that will let Digits be the ledger and will work a short exception list instead of QuickBooks bank rules.
Not ideal if
Anyone whose CPA will only open a live QuickBooks Online file, who sells inventory, who needs multi-currency or a non-US entity, or who wants Digits to run payroll or e-file 1099s.
Standout
A full US general ledger with invoices and bill pay in the same file, published prices, and unlimited seats.
About Digits
Digits is the ledger. You connect banks and cards through Plaid, plus payroll (Gusto and other providers), Stripe, Ramp, and BILL. Lines post in Digits already categorized. You work the checklist: confirm the misses, match receipts, and finalize the bank rec. Send invoices and pay bills from the same file. Profit and loss, the balance sheet, and cash flow stay current. Invite your accountant; seats are not billed.
It replaces QuickBooks Online and Xero. It does not sit on those files. You can migrate from QuickBooks Online once, set a cutover date, and run a parallel close before you cancel QBO. After cutover, the QuickBooks connection is archived and nothing writes back. Xero and other files come in as a CSV. Kick is the other replacement ledger in this directory, cheaper and cash-first, with less built-in bill pay and invoicing. Wave is a cheaper cash file. Bench is humans closing books in their own software. Digits's job is an AI-categorized US ledger with bill pay and invoicing in one subscription.
People who stick are usually US service and SaaS shops, or firms, who want to leave QuickBooks without a monthly bookkeeping service. They care about a short exception list instead of bank rules, and a year-end Excel package a CPA can open. They still review: Digits does not e-file 1099s or the return.
What people who used it say
What they tend to like
Exception list instead of bank rules
Owners and bookkeepers treat Digits as an 80/20 review: most lines book themselves, and you spend time on the misses.
Firms say the automations actually save close time
On r/taxpros, people who have used it cite categorization and bank rec that cut the weekly job versus QuickBooks rules.
Invoices and bills post in the same file
Collect or pay from Digits and the receivable or payable lands in the ledger instead of a second app.
What they hesitate about
Public price looks high next to cheaper ledgers
r/taxpros comments call $65 steep versus a QBO Ledger client or a cheaper replacement file. Partner plans are lower; public Essentials is not.
You still own the exception list
It is software, not a signed set of books. Someone competent still works the checklist before you lock the period.
Leaving QuickBooks has a real cutover
Invoice documents, payment status, aging history, and rec history do not migrate. Recreate open AR/AP in Digits. After cutover, QBO no longer syncs.

Work the checklist, match receipts, finalize the bank rec, then lock the period. Accrual schedules and Agentic Close are a Pro pass. You can run a parallel close in QuickBooks for the first month; after cutover, nothing writes back.
Invite the accountant at no extra seat cost, or download the year-end Excel package (ledger, trial balance, P&L, balance sheet, cash flow, AR aging, AP aging) plus a 1099-eligible vendor CSV. Digits does not e-file the return or the 1099s.

Features
Categorize as the feed lands
Connect banks and cards through Plaid. Payroll, Stripe, Ramp, and BILL post into the same ledger. Digits books the line and flags what needs a human. You confirm the misses. Off-cycle Gusto payrolls still need a manual entry.
Bank rec and the checklist
Digits matches bank and card activity to statements (connected or uploaded) and surfaces exceptions. You finalize the rec and can lock the period. Agentic Close (auto-fetched statements, anomaly flags, custom checklists) sits on Pro.
Invoices and bill pay in the same file
Create invoices and collect by card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, or ACH. Drop a bill, approve, and pay by ACH (50¢), mailed check ($2.50), or Digits Pay Collect ($2). Money movement needs business verification first.
Departments, locations, and reports
P&L, balance sheet, and cash flow are on every plan. Departments, locations, and custom dashboards sit on Core and Pro. Schedules for depreciation, amortization, and accruals sit on Pro. Export to Excel or PDF.
Tax package, W-9s, and 1099 review
Download a year-end Excel package (ledger, trial balance, P&L, balance sheet, cash flow, AR aging, AP aging). Store W-9s in Vault. Export a 1099-eligible vendor CSV. Digits does not e-file 1099s or the income tax return.
Ask Digits, API, MCP, and iPhone
Ask Digits answers questions from the live ledger on every plan. Developer API and MCP (ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor) are listed on every public plan with no extra API fee. Native iPhone and iPad app; requires an existing Digits account. No Android app on pages opened.
Pricing
A one-entity US shop on Essentials pays $65/month after a 30-day trial. There is no published annual discount. Two operating LLCs is 2 × $65. Core is $100 if you need departments and locations or custom dashboards. Pro is $250 and is a sales conversation. Seats are unlimited. Bill pay is extra: 50¢ per ACH, $2.50 per mailed check, $2 Digits Pay Collect. Collecting on a Digits invoice on Essentials is 3.0% + 30¢ on cards, or 1% ACH capped at $15. Core cards are 2.9% + 30¢; ACH 1% capped at $10. Sales tax may apply. Firms can buy partner-only client plans from $10/month (Low Volume, 250 transactions/year, client cannot see financials) through $100 Core for Firms.

Pick something else instead of Digits
Kick
Pick Kick instead if you want a cheaper US replacement ledger (Free to 250 expense transactions/year, Basic from $40/month billed annually) with a year-end tax package and multi-entity in one workspace. Kick has less built-in bill pay and invoicing.
QuickBooks Online
Stay in QuickBooks Online if your CPA will only open that file, you sell inventory, you need multi-currency, or you want the Intuit accountant ecosystem. Digits replaces the file; it does not sit next to it after cutover.
Wave
Pick Wave instead if you want a $0 cash-basis file and unlimited invoices, and you will enter lines by hand or pay $19/month for a bank feed. Wave is cheaper and simpler; Digits is the leave-Wave path once you want AI rec and bill pay in the ledger.
Bench
Pick Bench instead if you want humans to categorize, reconcile, and close the month in their software, and you do not want to work an exception checklist yourself.
