TaxJar

Pulls store and marketplace sales into one report, then AutoFiles US sales tax. Not your ledger.

Best for

US ecommerce sellers with nexus in more than one state who want one report plus AutoFile across Amazon, Shopify, and other carts.

Not ideal if

Anyone who needs TaxJar to be the ledger, a new Xero connection, tax calculated inside QuickBooks, or VAT/GST (that is Stripe Tax).

Standout

Published US volume ladder plus AutoFile in all 45 sales-tax states, with flex fees instead of a cutoff, for shops that are not already all-in on Stripe Tax.

About TaxJar

TaxJar is not the ledger. You connect Amazon, Shopify, PayPal, Square, Woo, or QuickBooks Online. Paid sales (plus refunds and returns) import into one report, broken out by state and local jurisdiction. Enroll AutoFile per state and TaxJar submits the return; the state debits your US bank. You still close sales in QuickBooks Online or the store. TaxJar does not calculate tax inside QuickBooks. New Xero links have been closed since August 2022.

Stripe Tax is the sibling product if you already collect on Stripe and need VAT or GST. TaxJar stays US sales tax, and it is the US filing partner inside Stripe Tax Complete. Avalara is the heavier contact-sales engine. A2X posts marketplace payouts into QuickBooks Online or Xero; it does not file. Native QuickBooks Online sales tax can be enough if you sell in one or two states and will file the returns yourself.

People who stick usually sell on more than one channel, have nexus in several states, and want one report plus AutoFile instead of a login at each department of revenue. Marketplace sellers often stay on Starter because Amazon or Etsy already calculated tax at checkout. Direct-to-cart shops that need the API or a second login move to Professional.

What people who used it say

What they tend to like

  • One report across the carts you already sell on

Amazon, Shopify, and other channels land in one state breakdown so multi-state filing is not a spreadsheet.

  • AutoFile so you are not in 20 DOR portals

Enroll per state and TaxJar submits on the due date; the state debits your bank.

  • A public ladder and flex fees

You can stay on average volume and pay the next tier only in a spike month, instead of taking an Avalara quote.

What they hesitate about

  • The bill jumps at volume and at a second login

Starter $39 is 200 orders. Shopify reviews say the floor doubled from $19. A second user forces Professional, where 1K to 2.5K orders is $499 to $1,199/mo before filings.

  • Support after the Stripe acquisition

Shopify reviews in 2026 cite long waits, missed meetings, and canned replies. Older Reddit threads say the same after the 2021 deal.

  • Exemptions and taxability still need a human pass

Shopify merchants say store-level exempt customers and non-taxable SKUs do not always follow into AutoFile, which means amendments or tax paid out of pocket.

Review the TaxJar report against collected tax before AutoFile starts processing on the 1st of the due month. Pause if product taxability or late imports are still open. After Ready to File, new transactions slip to the next period. You still book the liability and the state debit in QuickBooks.

Invite a Professional user (up to 10), or export XLS reports (Detailed Sales Tax Analysis export is on Professional). Filing History keeps a copy of AutoFiled returns. TaxJar does not e-file income tax or 1099s.

Features

Import channels into one state report

Connect Amazon, Shopify, PayPal (covers eBay), Square, Etsy, Walmart, Squarespace, or QuickBooks Online. Woo, BigCommerce, Magento 2, and the API need Professional. Starter allows 3 data-import integrations; Professional allows 10 unique (import plus API). CSV is on both. Order tier counts sales, refunds, and returns.

AutoFile in 45 sales-tax states

Starter includes 2 AutoFile credits a year (one every 6 months). Professional includes 4 (one a quarter). Extra filings are $50 on Starter or $55 on Professional. You enroll per state with a US bank and an active permit. The state debits the tax due. Alaska is not supported. No filing outside the US. Colorado home-rule city returns and the Colorado retail delivery fee are not AutoFiled.

Real-time checkout rates on Professional

The TaxJar API and the Woo, BigCommerce, and Magento 2 plugins calculate US sales tax at checkout. Starter is for marketplace sellers where the cart already calculated tax; support says you do not get real-time calculations on Starter.

Economic nexus checker; dashboard on Professional

Starter gets a sales-and-transactions checker. Professional adds the Nexus Insights dashboard and alerts when you approach a state's threshold. TaxJar will file a new-state permit for a one-time $299 if you do not want to do the paperwork.

QuickBooks Online import, not a tax engine in QBO

OAuth from Linked Accounts. TaxJar imports the last 3 months, then pulls an invoice when it is paid in full. Unpaid invoices, partial payments, and credit memos do not sync. TaxJar does not calculate sales tax inside QuickBooks. Desktop is not supported. New Xero connections closed in August 2022.

Flex fees instead of a hard cutoff

If a month blows past your order tier, TaxJar bills the difference to the next published tier and drops you back the next month. Official example: Professional 500 ($249) that hits 750 orders pays $250 extra that month (the step up to Professional 1K at $499). API rate lookups count toward the cap (10 calls = 1 order on Professional).

Pricing

The $39 and $99 stickers are the 200-order floors. A ~500-order marketplace shop on Starter pays $59/mo ($629/yr). The same volume that needs Woo, the API, or a second login is Professional 500 at $249/mo ($2,499/yr). Four states filing monthly is 48 returns; Starter includes 2 credits, so 46 x $50 is $2,300 (or a 50-pack at $2,225) on top of the subscription, plus $299 per new-state registration. Flex fees bill the next published tier for a spike month, then drop you back. Annual saves 10% or more on the subscription only.
